We’re half awake in a fake empire.

I know this isn’t a new song, and everybody’s probably heard it by now, but I just had to share it again. It’s so immaculately constructed. The mannered piano part that begins, almost verging on chamber music, gradually morphs, shifts, gives way to a more insistent drumbeat that rides over the top and interrupts, locking in until the sudden break at 1:33 drops you into an unexpectedly sudden moment of introspection, of reverie. Then the guttural guitar kicking around the beat and the flourishing horns pogoing antiphonally bring it home.

I keep thinking about that sudden drop-out at 1:33. It sounds like laying down in the arms of your love, spent in that fleeting moment of clarity….

I hope you enjoy the song.
